Jacob encountered God at Peniel

“Then the man said, ‘Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.’ ” – Genesis 32:28

Summary of Genesis 32:22-32

Jacob wrestled with “a man” until daybreak. Jacob did not let go, and he said I will not let you go unless you bless me.. Then “the man” said, Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome. God blessed Jacob.

Questions

10 a. Who do you think the “man” was in Genesis 32:24? Give reasons from this passage for your answer. Verse 28: because you have struggled with God and verse 30, `because I saw God face to face. This “man” is God.

b. What might God have been trying to teach Jacob in this wrestling match? To rely on God rather than his own strength and scheme.

11. Why was Jacob’s hip wrenched out of its socket? How did he respond? The “man”, God, touch his hip. Jacob did not give up, he did not let go of “the man”.

12. What “limp” keeps you dependent on God? What have you learned? My plans and money are nothing if God isn’t with me.
