God called Jacob to return Bethel

“So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, ‘Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.’ ... Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.” – Genesis 35:2, 5

9. What was God’s specific command to Jacob, and why was Bethel significant? (See Genesis 28:10-22.) God said to Jacob, “Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.” Bethel means house of God.

10. How did Jacob exercise needed leadership in his family following their trouble and God’s command? He instructed his household to get rid of foreign gods and purify themselves.

b. How are you helped or encouraged by these truths about God? Despite how Jacob has been behaving, God is faithful to his promises.
