Abram and Lot separate

“Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” – Genesis 13:17

Summary of Genesis 13:1-13

We see that Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. This could be gifts from the Pharaoh. But these assets has become a problem, a source of conflict between him and Lot. They have to separate to prevent conflict.

Lot selects based on the land’s condition; it is well-watered. But it is near Sodom, where the people were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord, and later we know that it was destroyed.

Questions

What are some causes given for the need of Abram and Lot to separate? After received the gifts from Pharaoh, they were wealthy, filled with assets. But there are quarreling between Abram’s herders and Lot’s as their possessions were so great that they could not stay together.

What does the way Abram and Lot separate say about each man’s character? Abram might have learned something about many choices in the previous situation. He allowed Lot to choose first. His faith in God could have grown to allow Lot to choose first. Lot chose the plain of the Jordan as it was well watered. He relies on his wisdom.

What can believers give up to put others first and to pursue peace? We can let go of our pride to think that we are right all the time. We are quick to defend ourselves when people point out our mistakes.

Why is it hard to pursue peace in your relationships? How has God helped you with this? Pride. It is our default mentality to think we are not wrong. God allow me to learn from difficult situations and trust in him rather than rely on my own wisdom and strength. We also tends to put our needs higher than others.
