Project Euler - Problem 6 - Sum square difference

Find the difference between the sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers and the square of the sum.

The problem

This is problem 6 from the Project Euler.

The sum of the squares of the first ten natural numbers is,

1^2 + 2^2 + … + 10^2 = 385

The square of the sum of the first ten natural numbers is,

(1 + 2 + … + 10)^2 = 552 = 3025

Hence the difference between the sum of the squares of the first ten natural numbers and the square of the sum is 3025 − 385 = 2640.

Find the difference between the sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers and the square of the sum.


Thinking process

The square of the sum of the first ten natural numbers is,

(1 + 2 + … + 10)^2 = 552 = 3025

Find the patterns.

sum_of_first_n(4) = 1+2+3+4 = 10
sum_of_first_n(6) = 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21
sum_of_first_n(8) = 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8 = 36
sum_of_first_n(10) = 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10 = 55

I know I have to make use of the n.

sum_of_first_n(4) = (4+1)*2 = 10
sum_of_first_n(6) = (6+1)*3 = 21
sum_of_first_n(8) = (8+1)*4 = 36
sum_of_first_n(10) = (10+1)*5 = 55

I am seeing a pattern here, and that is:

sum_of_first_n(n) = (n+1)*(n/2)

And return as square of sum with this function:

  return Math.pow( (n+1)*(n/2), 2);
}

The sum of the squares of the first ten natural numbers is,

1^2 + 2^2 + … + 10^2 = 385

Find the patterns.

sum_of_square(2) = 5
  = 1^2 + 2^2
  = 2^2 + 1
sum_of_square(3) = 14
  = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2
  = 3^2 + 5
sum_of_square(4) = 30
  = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4^2
  = 4^2 + 14
sum_of_square(5) = 55
  = 1^2 + 2^2 + 3^2 + 4^2 + 5^2
  = 5^2 + 30

By looking at the additions, you can tell that we need another multiplier, having other additions is simply not enough.

After much trials, I realised it about multiplying n with n+1 with n+(n+1):

sum_of_square(2) = 5
  = (2*3 * (2+3))/6
sum_of_square(3) = 14
  = (3*4 * (3+4))/6
sum_of_square(4) = 30
  = (4*5 * (4+5))/6
sum_of_square(5) = 55
  = (5*6 * (5+6))/6

And we get this function:
