Laban deceived Jacob by disguising Leah as Rachel on the wedding night

“When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, ‘What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn’t I? Why have you deceived me?’ ” – Genesis 29:25

Summary of Genesis 29:21-30

After working for 7 years, Jacob asked for Rachel. Laban invited the guest, and instead of giving Rachel, he brought Leah. He realized it only on the next day, confronted Laban, and he said it is their custom to give older daughters first. Jacob wanted Rachel, and Laban said he can have Rachel if Jacob agreed to work for another 7 years, and he agreed.

Questions

9. What possible motivations did Laban have for the deception he chose? What reason did he give? He wanted Jacob to work for him. He wanted both daughters to get married.

10. Describe the multiplied hurt imposed by Laban’s deception. Jacob was deceived for not getting Rachel, and he had to work for another 7 years. Leah was dishonored as his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. Rachel isn’t Jacob’s first and only wife.

11. In what ways did Laban’s deceit cause Jacob to reap what he had sown? (See Genesis 27 and Galatians 6:7-8.) Like how Jacob had deceit his father, Isaac, for his blessings, now he is being fooled by Laban.

12. How do you explain the fact that even with God’s forgiveness, sin has consequences? Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction (Galatians 6:8). But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. (Numbers 32:23).

13. How has God disciplined and developed you through the consequences of your sin? Suffering has made me realized that God is in control, and God is the only hope.
