Abram met with Melchizedek and Sodom’s king

“Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.” – Genesis 13:17

Summary of Genesis 14:17-24

After Abram has come back from defeating Kedorlaomer, two kings came and meet him, king of Sodom and Salem.

The king of Salem, Melchizedek, was also a priest, and he blessed Abram and praised God. Melchizedek understood that Abram’s victory is because of God.

On the other hand, the king of Sodom requested to take the people while Abram can keep the possessions. But Abram does not need any possessions; his faith has grown to know that God will provide for him.

Questions

What differences stand out about Abram’s dealings with the king of Salem and the king of Sodom? Abram gave the king of Salem, who praised God, a tenth of everything he had. In contrast, Abram did not want to have any part of the king of Sodom.

What are ways the Bible later says Melchizedek prefigured the person and work of Jesus Christ? Melchizedek was a king and a priest. Jesus is the king who will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom (Isaiah 9:6-7) and a faithful high priest in service to God (Hebrews 2:17-18).

Which of God’s qualities and deeds did Melchizedek publicly proclaim in blessing Abram? Melchizedek publicly proclaim God as Most High, and God who delivered Abram’s enemies.

Whom can you thank for offering God’s grace and blessing to you? How will you thank God for them? My mum, who would remind me about God, his goodness, and his faithfulness.
