Summary of Genesis 1:26-31

All of creation up to this point has been an introduction to prepare for day six, the creation of the human race. This was the central object of God’s creative purpose from the beginning; creating humans is still at the center of God’s purpose for the entire material universe.

Questions

What distinguishes humanity from the rest of creation? God created mankind in his own image, and God created people to rule over creation.

What does it mean to be created in God’s image? In Eph 4:24, and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Created in God’s image means we are to reflect God-likeness, though finite human beings, cannot reflect completely reflect the nature of God, we are to reflect God-likeness in a limited way. Created in God’s image also means that human life is valuable, and every person must be treated with respect.

What do you learn about the identity and purpose of humanity? How does that help, encourage or challenge you? Humans reflect God-likeness in a limited way, through righteousness and holiness. We are to reflect God’s image in every aspect and area of our lives.

What commands did God give humanity? What is our responsibility today in view of these commands? Be fruitful and increase in number. Some people must get married and have children; children are one of God’s greatest blessings and biggest responsibilities to us. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. God gave mankind stewardship to manage the earth and its resources.
